HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)
Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems control the temperature, humidity, and total air quality in residential, commercial, industrial and other buildings. Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) technicians install, maintain, and repair such systems.
Skills You Will Learn
- Basic commercial refrigeration and heating systems including circuit wiring, reading schematics, brazing and soldering
- Refrigeration software
- Build a basic refrigeration system.
- Preparation for EPA-approved Section 608 Technician Certification test required to handle commercial refrigerant.
Individuals who have previously completed the HVAC-R program or any HVAC-R classes at M-TEC are eligible to take the program/class at half off tuition if the class is not full. Contact M-TEC at 616-738-8935 extension 4200 for more details.

Heating, Service & Equipment
Location: Thompson M-TEC Main Campus
Description:
This portion of the HVACR program teaches students about various efficiency furnaces and the four types of ignition systems used.
Students also learn:
- Basic wiring of electrical circuits, control circuits, thermostats and limits
- Meters and tools used for servicing a furnace
- Troubleshooting and servicing a gas furnace
- Repairing simulated furnace field problems using interactive computer software.
This course has transferable college credit.
Basic Refrigeration
Location: Thompson M-TEC Main Campus
Description:
The Basic Refrigeration portion of the HVACR program provides an introduction to:
- Basic mechanical refrigeration systems
- Compressors
- Condensers
- Flow controls
- Evaporators
- Refrigerants
Upon successful completion students are prepared to take the E.P.A. Refrigerant Handling Certification Test, a national trade requirement.
This course has transferable college credit.
Air Conditioning
Location: Thompson M-TEC Main Campus
Description:
In this segment of the HVACR program, students gain hands-on experience to ensure the performance of fully operational HVAC equipment, cycles of operation, importance of proper airflow and components of safety protection.
Students will also learn:
- Brazing and soldering copper
- Refrigerant recovery
- Charging a unit
- Calculating superheat
- Subcooling
- Troubleshooting
- Calculating air flow
- Temperature rise method
- Unit capacity in cooling mode
Upon successful completion of the course, students can apply to take the E.P.A. Refrigerant Handling Certification test. This course has transferable college credit.
Commercial Refrigeration
Location: Thompson M-TEC Main Campus
Description:
This fast-paced review covers basic refrigeration cycles, components, and equipment.
Students learn about:
- Brazing and soldering
- Wiring of circuits
- Reading schematics
- Refrigeration software troubleshooting and repairs
- Build a basic refrigeration system with a capillary tube or TXV metering devices
This course has transferable college credit.
Refrigerant Recovery Certification Preparation
Location: Thompson M-TEC Main Campus
Certification Types:
- Type I-Small Appliances
- Type II-High Pressure and Very High-Pressure Appliances
- Type III-Low Pressure Appliances
- Universal-Type I, II, & III
Description:
Prepare to take the Refrigerant Recovery Certification exam required by Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act in this course.
