CTC STUDENTS TAKE TOP SPOTS IN STATE AND NATIONAL CONTESTS
Holland, MI- Students in the Agricultural and Animal Science program at Careerline Tech Center, a service of Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, took top spots in competitions that demonstrated their knowledge this month.
Careerline Tech Center earned third place overall in the Michigan Future Farmers of America (FFA) Broiler Contest held at Munsell’s Poultry Processing in Fowlerville November 5-8. Nearly 490 teams from across the state participated.
All competitors received chicks from the same hatchery and used skills required for many aspects of the agriculture industry to monitor and raise the chickens for roughly five weeks leading up to the contest. While working with the birds, students gained experience in all 11 growth factors including feed, proper temperature and health status through record keeping.
Students competed for four days with a winner named each day. Team Chick-Fil-A took first place in the November 7th contest to earn a gold award. The team consisted of:
- Haylee Allen, Zeeland West High School senior
- Olivia Klein, Grand Haven High School senior
- Avary Limon, Zeeland West High School junior
- Yadriel Ostolaza, Holland High School senior
- Kailee Sisson, Saugatuck High School junior
- Aiva Smith, Black River School senior
November 12 -14, Agriculture and Animal Science program students stepped out of their comfort zones to compete in the Washington County Virtual Career Development Event nationwide skills contest. Students selected a competition category and spent two weeks preparing for the contest with information provided by both Michigan and the National FFA chapters.
Tech Center students placed in the top five nationally in Livestock Judging, Milk Quality and Veterinary Science competitions.
“Skill contests help students understand what they need to know for the career field they want to pursue and helps them explore different careers and opportunities within the agricultural industries,” Agriculture and Animal Sciences Instructor Faith Scheffler, said. “Applying the knowledge and skills they learned in class in real-life situations better prepares them to use these skills immediately after high school whether they are in college, enter directly into the agriculture industry or on their farms at home.”
