CTC STUDENTS COLLECT OVER 200 TOYS FOR LOCAL CHILDREN
Holland, MI- For over 10 years, students in the Software and Game Development (S&G) program at Careerline Tech Center, a service of Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, have organized and facilitated a Toys for Tots campaign as a community service project for the S&G program.
“Our student-led Toys for Tots event is a heartwarming display of generosity and community spirit,” Emmanuel Martinez, Software and Game Development Instructor for Careerline Tech Center, said. “With over 200 toys collected, it's clear that our small acts can make a big difference.”
The S&G Student Leadership Team placed toy collection boxes in Tech Center classrooms as well as the front office and nearby OAISD Educational Services Building. Students are responsible for crafting and delivering motivational announcements over the PA, collecting and counting the toys, and then carrying the boxes of toys out to the Lakeshore Toys for Tots pickup truck.
Through facilitating the Toys for Tots campaign, students practice key employability and leadership skills such as organization, professionalism, and communication while impacting their community.
"Being a part of Toys for Tots and having the opportunity to give kids in need the toys they deserve for Christmas is one of my favorite parts of the holidays,” S&G Development program student and senior at Blair Ciolk, said. “I have had the pleasure of helping with Toys for Tots for the past two years and I'm excited to see how it develops in the future."
All Tech Center programs were challenged to contribute presents and the chance to win a pizza party for the classes. The Public Safety and Security Services program contributed almost half of the presents to secure the win.
“We look forward to continuing this tradition and hope to see even more programs join in to spread more joy and make the next event even more successful,” Martinez said.
