OAISD HOSTS EXPO FOR EARLY ON STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
Holland, MI - More than 125 families and their children enjoyed a free, educational experience at Fun Day hosted by Ottawa Area ISD Early Childhood Program in Lawrence Street Park in Zeeland on Thursday, May 23. Over 25 agencies and community partners joined OAISD Early Childhood programs to provide stations supporting physical, cognitive, and social-emotional growth.
“Our attending community partners provide valuable resources and information for families and offer insights into local services and support available to enhance children's development and well-being”, Maureen Schmidt, M.Ed., IMH-E®, Director of Early Childhood Services for Ottawa Area ISD, said. “Families can receive direct support and guidance on various topics related to early childhood development, health and safety.”
Schmidt added the day is an opportunity to celebrate the unique stages of early childhood, recognizing and supporting each child's growth and development in a festive and supportive environment.
Fun Day started over 20 years ago as Barn Day at Ottawa Area Center and is designed to engage children in activities that promote essential developmental skills. The annual event is an opportunity for families to connect with staff, community partners and other families to build a supportive network within the community. Many organizations donate raffle items for families ranging from family swim passes, gift baskets and gift cards, to passes to the Zoo along with fitting 85 children with bike helmets to keep children safe.
Community partner Nicole Zaagman from Parkside Farm said she loves taking her pygmy goats to events with young families.
“I enjoy teaching them about farm education and agriculture and giving them a taste of farm life,” Zaagman said. “It’s important to be involved in the community through events like Fun Day and be a role model for children.”
“Our Annual Fun Day is a fantastic opportunity for families in our early childhood department to connect, engage in enjoyable activities with their children, and access valuable resources from community partners,” said Schmidt. “It's a day filled with fun, laughter, and meaningful connections that strengthen our community!”
