OAISD HOSTS RIBBON-CUTTING FOR NEW FACILITY DESIGNED TO SUPPORT YOUNG ADULTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
Holland, MI - Ottawa Area Intermediate School District (OAISD) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, September 17, for its new facility located at 12360 Felch Street in Holland that is now home to the Young Adult Services (YAS) program. The purposefully designed facility supports students with special needs, aged 18-26, and helps meet the growing demand for transition services aimed at developing essential work and life skills for greater independence.
The YAS program provides personalized education for adults with special needs, empowering them to lead independent, meaningful lives. Students focus on employability, social-emotional development, communication skills, and household independence, ensuring they can successfully integrate into the community.
John Koerner, Director of Young Adult Services for OAISD, said the YAS program operated out of various facilities across the region for decades including leased and district-owned spaces in Coopersville, Grand Haven, Holland and Zeeland. “The Holland and Zeeland facilities did not fully meet the unique needs of our students,” Koerner explained. “Building a new facility allowed us to design a space that accommodates the specific learning and physical needs of the students while consolidating resources from two geographically close locations into one location.”
The new facility offers updated accommodations and a central location that better serves the needs of YAS students.
“The facility is designed for all types of learners with flexible and movable seating, and common areas modeled after community college spaces, allowing students to practice social skills, Koerner said. “The kitchen and laundry areas are adapted for those with physical differences, allowing students to gain practical skills that enhance their independence. Additionally, the proximity to the MAX Busline provides opportunities for students to practice using public transportation, further supporting their independence.”
Koerner added that The Shops at Westshore location offers a wide range of employment partnerships, providing real-world employment experiences that empower students on their path to independence.
OAISD Superintendent Dr. Kyle Mayer said, “Our district’s mission is simple but profound: to ensure that every learner in our community has the opportunity to realize their potential. Equipping students with the skills needed for real-world jobs reduces reliance on tax-funded adult social services and empowers individuals with special needs to contribute as productive, engaged members of the community,”. “Through hands-on experience in various work environments, students help support the local economy, strengthen community connections and lead happier, more productive lives.”
The YAS program serves over 200 students throughout the Ottawa Area ISD region with facilities located in Coopersville, Grand Haven, Holland and Hudsonville. The new Felch Street Building currently serves approximately 100 students.
