SHELDON PINES SCHOOL STUDENTS RAISE MONEY FOR CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER
Holland, MI- Students at Sheldon Pines School (SPS), a service of Ottawa Area Intermediate School District, presented Children’s Advocacy Center in Holland with a check for $531 raised through a school fundraiser Thursday, March 30.
SPS students and staff held a Penny War competition from March 6 to 30 between classrooms to encourage friendly competition between classrooms while school staff and students gave back to the community.
Amy Dalman, Director of Communication for Children’s Advocacy Center, accepted the donation and told Sheldon Pines students she has never received such a big donation from such a small school. “CAC is so grateful for the support of SPS students and staff,” Dalman said. “The donations will help CAC counseling and services to children in Ottawa County who have been abused.” Dalman added CAC also visits schools to teach students how to keep their bodies safe and where to turn for help if they need it.
SPS holds a Penny War fundraiser every year for local non-profits to teach students about giving back and the positive feelings associated with it. Past recipients have included Kids Food Basket, The Bridge Youth Center and The Big Give which provides aid to West Michigan kids in need.
“Penny Wars is an excellent example of how giving back to the community can be fun,” Director for Sheldon Pines School, Brandie Navarro, said. “I'm proud of the generosity of my staff and students, and I'm not surprised. We've got some pretty big hearts over here.”
